Zurich is a compact city, and most districts are well connected by the VBZ tram and bus network and the S-Bahn rail system. But each Kreis has its own character, price range, and lifestyle. Choosing the right neighbourhood shapes your daily routine, commute, and social life. Here is a practical look at the districts that work best for expats.

Kreis 4 -- Trendy and central

Kreis 4 is Zurich's most vibrant and diverse district. Centred around Langstrasse, it has the highest concentration of restaurants, bars, and cultural venues in the city. The neighbourhood has a gritty energy that appeals to younger expats and creatives. Rents for a one-bedroom apartment typically range from CHF 1,900 to CHF 2,400 per month.

Transport is excellent. Multiple tram lines run through Kreis 4, and the Hauptbahnhof is within walking distance from much of the district. Grocery shopping is easy with Migros and Coop branches throughout. The tradeoff is noise. Langstrasse is lively at night, so if you prefer quiet evenings, look at the side streets further from the main strip.
